Musician Profile: Sounds Like PDM

Patrick Deese, Sounds Like PDM

SIGNAL INTERCEPTION was a long, 6 year project. It takes its inspiration from the shortwave radio broadcasts of the Cold War era - when governments would send their spies across the world instructions via shortwave in mysterious encoded messages.

Although I am American, I lived many years overseas as a child, and shortwave radio was an essential part of my routine.

SIGNAL INTERCEPTION consists of electronic music mixed with samples of actual shortwave broadcasts, and the flutters and static bursts that are common for these types of broadcasts.

I used quite a few synthesizers to put these songs together - everything from a Moog Subphatty to a Teenage Engineering OP-1, a variety of Pocket Operators, an 88 key Korg SV-1 and a variety of eurorack modules, a Gibson Les Paul Special, a bass guitar, and probably 3 dozen different guitar pedals to get some of the unique sounds you'll hear throughout the album.

Some of my strongest early musical memories are of listening to albums like Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon and DJ Spooky's Songs of a Dead Dreamer over and over. SIGNAL INTERCEPTION is also an old fashioned album in the sense that it's not a bunch of singles, it's intended to be played in its entirety.

Some of my musical influences include, really, there are too many to list, but... in no particular order: Joy Division, New Order, Pink Floyd, DJ Spooky, Tricky, SZA, C418, The Swans, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Freescha, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin & Keyboard Cat.
